What our cable is used for

Most jobs need one of two materials and a couple of sizes.

Cable railing

316 stainless gives decks, stairs and balconies a clean, open look and holds up to the weather, even on the coast.

Suggested: 316 stainless in 1/8" or 3/16"

Fencing, gates and ranch work

Galvanized 7×19 takes the strain on fence lines, gate braces and corrals, and the zinc coating lasts outdoors.

Suggested: galvanized in 1/8" or 3/16"

Winch lines and pulleys

Flexible 7×19 bends around sheaves and winch drums without kinking, for pull lines, tie-downs and rigging.

Suggested: galvanized in 3/16" or 1/4"

Marine and docks

Boat rigging, docks and outdoor gear near salt spray, where galvanized cable would rust sooner.

Suggested: 316 stainless in 3/16" or 1/4"

Guy wires and signage

Stay poles, masts and antennas, hang signs and lighting, or carry cables across a span.

Suggested: galvanized in 3/32" or 1/8"

Agriculture and greenhouses

Support wires for vineyard and orchard trellises, hop yards and greenhouses.

Suggested: galvanized in 3/32" or 1/8"

Choosing the right cable

Galvanized
316 stainless

Galvanized or 316 stainless

Galvanized cable is zinc-coated carbon steel. It’s the stronger and cheaper of the two, and lasts well in most outdoor work.

316 stainless costs more, but resists corrosion far better and stays bright. Choose it near the sea, around chemicals, or where rust would show.

7×7
7×19

7×7 or 7×19

7×7 has seven wires in each of its seven strands, for a stiffer cable that holds a straight line and resists abrasion.

7×19 has nineteen finer wires per strand, so it bends easily around pulleys and drums. Our 3/32" cable is 7×7, and the 1/8", 3/16" and 1/4" sizes are 7×19.

Breaking load and working load

Minimum breaking load is the force that breaks new cable in a straight pull. For a working load, divide it by a design factor, commonly 5.

Fittings, bends and wear reduce what a cable can carry. Anything for lifting or protecting people should be specified by a competent person.

Common questions

All questions

How much does freight cost?

Delivery is priced on the total weight of your order and shown at checkout. One 3/32" reel starts at $88.20. See the delivery page for every size.

Can I buy cable cut to length?

No, we sell full 3,281 ft reels only. For anything else, ask for a quote.

Do you offer trade or bulk pricing?

Prices are the same for everyone. For larger quantities or a regular supply, ask for a quote.

How heavy is a reel?

A full reel weighs about 60 lb for 3/32", 103 lb for 1/8", 216 lb for 3/16" and 370 lb for 1/4". For the 3/16" and 1/4" reels, have a forklift or liftgate ready and say so in the delivery instructions.

Where do you deliver?

We ship to the 48 contiguous states and Washington, DC. Ground parcel takes the 3/32" and 1/8" reels and LTL freight with liftgate takes every size. We don’t ship to Alaska and Hawaii.
